Rescue Me

Hey all!

So we didn't quite finish breaking the season finale on Monday. As far as I know we're missing two beats. The first beat we need to flesh out is in the Nowhere - how do we get Chance to the "could I be a hero" moment (just before Carly calls)? Most likely we'll just do this through conversation, but I would like to hear from everyone to see if they have any alternatives. The second beat is probably the most important - what is Chance racing to do? We have two suggestions thus far - he's either going to stop the wedding or going to stop Morgan from leaving. So let's break this.

Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

I'm still for Chance racing to save the marriage. I think it has a bigger impact on how Chance has grown emotionally. If he's just going to stop the wedding, then it doesn't really show that he's grown at all. With that said, the issue has come up that, what would Chance be racing too, cause if they weren't going to get married, then Morgan and Carly wouldn't be there. However, I still think it could work, if there's intercuts between Chance and the wedding, like we don't know what Carly is going to say but she's definately got cold feet. As we see Chance saving the CSG we see the ceremony is end, but we're not sure how it turned out. Chance makes it to where ever it is the ceremony was and sees Carly walk out by herself, before she gets an opportunity to say anything Chance tells her that she's making a big mistake, but it's Morgan that comes out and tells him that it's okay, and that she was the one that called it off. Because she realized that they were drifting apart and only asked Carly to marry her because she was afraid of losing her, and that would be wrong (so it connects to Morgan Drops the Bomb episode). So now it's Morgan that has learned something from Chance and their friendship has grown tremendously.
I hope that all made sense.

I'm still not a big fan of saving the wedding. I think the original idea of Chance seeing the door open to get back with Carly is the strongest motivation for this episode.

This also shows a lot about his character when he chooses to help someone else out and risk not making it to the wedding in time. And I understand that the audience is left in the dark about why he is rushing there, but once it is revealed I feel it's a let down.

I tend to agree with Chris about getting Carly back being the motivation for his urgency. But I can certainly go with Adam's idea that he has grown emotionally through the series and now would rather they "be" together, since he sees now that they clearly "belong" together.

I also really like that, in Adam's idea, Morgan only asked Carly to marry her because she was afraid they were drifting apart. This has come up as the reason why Chance aksed Carly to move in originally. Now Morgan and Chance have this major character issue in common and it gives even more justification for why they end up so close.

We have to remember that Morgan is WAY more a part of this series than Carly. Therefore, I also agree with Adam's idea that Morgan tells Chance what's going on and Carly just fades out of the picture.

But we, of course, must always remember that this is all told from Chance's P.O.V. Carly was the love of his life, so he's not going to let her walk out of his life completely without some sort of fight, or at least protest. Maybe she leaves him with hope of friendship or something.

Good stuff, guys. Thanks for the help. I finished my first draft with the "save the marriage" angle, but if it doesn't work, I'll be more than happy to change it. Does anyone else have any ideas or opinions about which path we should take?

Like someone mentioned before in class, we can have both. In the beginning we can show that Chance wants her back, but then by saving the CSG, he realizes that Carly should be with Morgan.

I really like the idea of Chance being the bigger person in the sinario.

As to how he comes to this realization of letting Carly go, I'll get back to you...

Can someone clear up how saving the CSG leads him to to realization that Carly should be with Morgan?

Well I also think if Chance is going to try to save the wedding it shows emotional growth on his part, but somehow it just feels strange to me. Seriously, I just feel he has to protect himself at some point. That’s why I’m against his whole attempted wedding saving plan.

That’s not to say I don’t think he shouldn’t play nice with Carly and Morgan but when does he get to says he’s mad and has been wronged. There’s other ways to grow without being a pushover.

I've given these notes to Josh, but I wanted to share them with all of you since you've been blogging about the story...And, for that, I give thanks.

Things became clearer by looking at the preceding webisode. In "Morgan Drops The Bomb", Chance says he's not going to go to the wedding. And, in "Rescue Me", we need Chance to realize that he HAS to go, or it will be something HE'LL regret forever. It's about their happiness, not about his ego.

And he realizes this while sitting at the Nowhere, talking to Jimmy, on the day of the wedding. (We hold back the "cold feet" beat till later.)

Seeing the firefighter save the girl raises the question about how we respond when we're tested. And Jimmy points out that Chance is being tested RIGHT NOW. Carly and Morgan are getting married, and Chance can't handle it.

THIS is Chance's test...And he's blowing it. He bolts out of the Nowhere.

Now, it's about Chance racing to get to the wedding in time. It's not about stopping the wedding or saving the wedding. It's not about who should be with whom. It's about being part of the happiest day in Carly and Morgan's life.

Then, when Chance gets there too late, he does his "happiness, ego" speech to Morgan. Chance has grown, and Morgan is witness to it.

After the speech, Morgan tells Chance that they didn't get married. Carly got cold feet before the "I do's", and Morgan wasn't going to push her into saying 'yes'.

So there's still a race against the clock. And he's still racing to a wedding. But now it's about being there.

And, by the way, this structure does still leave the door open for Chance with Carly.

Doors are open everywhere.

That must be why it's so damn cold in here.

I think this idea (Chance racing to be there for his friends) allows us to have all the beats we want in the episode, but also show a lot of growth in Chance's character. I was wondering if there was still room for the "Casablanca/Play it Again Sam" idea that we talked about?

I think that makes much more sense.
